City of Panaji Goa

The city of Panaji Goa is the capital of the state. Located on the Mandovi River banks, in the North Goa district, Panaji is the 3rd biggest city of Goa after Maragao and Vasco da Gama. Earlier a fishing village, Goa claimed to prominence after erstwhile capital of Portuguese India, Old Goa, fell into the hands of epidemics of Cholera and Malaria during the later quarter of the 18th century. Panaji was given the city status as well as rechristened as New Goa or Nova Goa in 1843.
