Villages of Goa

With 347 villages in comparison to 44 towns, the smallest state of the Indian Territory, Goa is basically a village state. The villages of Goa are not like the other villages of India, in the sense that, Goa is counted among those states to have highest rates of literacy in India. The Goan people make a proper display of their civic sense and education. In simple words, behind the noisy beach life and the lively trance parties which have made Goa famous all over the world, lies a state which is very deeply attached to its roots, its villages.


Packed houses are common in most of the villages of Goa. The houses are built mainly of concrete; however, the older houses are made of red stone. The second floors of the houses are meant for storing grains. Traditional wells are found in most of the village houses. Most of the villages have beaches which has acquired the names from the respective villages.

Famous Village of Goa
In the following list, some of the famous Goa villages are detailed.

Arambol Village
Arambol is a fishing village, which falls under the district of Pernem in Goa. This is the biggest coastal village of the district. There are two beaches in this village. The Arambol or Harmal beach is more famous of the two beaches. The other beach ‘Lakeside’ or Paliem beach is famous for its serenity and is ideal for swimming. Both the beaches are ideal for enjoying a relaxing as well as peaceful holiday. There are plenty of accommodation options along with eateries in this village. The village is easily accessible by bus and taxi which can be availed from Chopdem and Mapusa.

Agarwada Village
Tucked around an intersection, Agarwada is a village of northern part of Goa. Tourists can check out the Government High School, Post Office, Agarwada Village Panchayat located in this village. The nearest place that tourists can visit while touring this place is Chopdem. Chopdem has a number of tourist landmarks that include Vetal Temple, Bhumika Temple, Rampurush Devasthan, Gaurdi Temple and more. Two beaches that are easily accessed while visiting this Goan village are Morjim and Ashwem.

Anjuna Village
Located 8 km from Mapusa, the village of Anjuna lies between the Anjuna Hill and Arabian Sea. The village is located 18 km from the capital of Goa. The village is famous for its flea market, which remains open during the tourist season. The flea market which is held on Wednesday sells variety of things. The flea market, the beach and the plenty of hotels and guest houses have made Anjuna village one of the most popular of all Goa villages. The village is easily accessed from Vagator.

Colva Village
Colva Village accommodates one of the oldest and biggest beaches of Goa, the Colva Beach. The village is famous for its number of tourist places, for example, Our Lady of Mercy Church. Colva Village has an improved network of roadways and is one of the most popular destinations in Goa.

Agonda Village
Located in the southern part of Goa, Agonda Village is bordered by forest. The Agonda Beach is the prime attraction of the village. The beach is crowded with casuarinas and palm trees and is perfect for those looking for seclusion. Variety of beach huts, holiday cottages and lodges attracts travelers from different places.
