Everyone is invited at the Goa Carnival that marks the non-stop grandiose festivity for three days. The huge Carnival witnesses 72 hours of gaiety with dancers and musicians performing cheerfully.


Renowned for its beaches, Goa is a vibrant city that invites people from across the world. Goa carnival started off in the year 1961 during the rule of Portuguese in the state. The word Carnival originated from Latin phase Carrus Navalis referring to Meat and good bye respectively. So for these three days prior to the carnival, there is complete self-restraint from the consumption of meat.

During the carnival, the entire state is engrossed in the party vehemence. Goa starts preparing for the grand occasion as early as in the month of December. Jankias, Fancy Dresses, street dance and other performers congregate to prepare for the festivity. The three days of merriment sees competitions, enlightening activities, delicious cuisines, wine, beverages that is in full swing throughout Goa.

Hotels in Goa conduct Ash Dance which is one of the renowned dance forms in the state, often illustrated in the Bollywood films. The revelers wear in colorful dresses and masquerades, boozing and partying in abundance. Other art forms such as impersonation are executed and parody of local characters is performed. Vivid displays seals the sky and veiled people clad in bright dresses stride in front of the parade.

Goa Carnival started off in pleasure-seeking buffets of prehistoric Greece and Rome. From these colonies it transported to Spain and Portuguese and consequently Portuguese introduced it in India. Massive and vivid processions all over the state are arranged with live bands and dancers. The city witnesses grand buffet dinners with special emphasis on meat and alcoholic beverages.

On day three, the famous Black and Red Dance mark the conclusion of the festivity. It leaves a sense of exclusiveness as it is not commemorated in any another place in India. Excitement, gambol, song and dance are the chief attractions of the Carnival.

Goa Villages comes up with an altogether different spirit of the Carnival as the villagers dance in a circle around a lamp to the pulsating beats of drums. The deafening tempo of drumming makes the dance form livelier. They hum songs admiring their forebears.

Carnival of Goa has now become inseparable from the legacy of the state. The celebration conveys the finest of the vivacious Goan culture.
