Forts of Goa
The erstwhile Portuguese colony of Goa has a rich history of its own. History monuments have dotted Goa, which is popularly known as the beach capital of India. Forts form an important part of the historical monuments of Goa. There are a number of forts in Goa which are the prime attractions of the state along with the variety of beaches. The forts of Goa are visited by a large number of local and foreign tourists throughout the year.
Famous Forts of Goa
There are a number of forts of Goa, some of which are listed below:
Aguada Fort
Built in the year 1612, Aguada Fort derives its name from the Portuguese word, ‘Aguada’, meaning water. The fort was built to protect the state from any kind of enemy attack from outside. A hotspot of various natural springs, a part of this famous fort has been changed into central jail. The fort is visited by large tourists throughout the year.
Chapora Fort
Constructed in the year 1617, Chapora Fort is located 22 km from Panaji, the capital city of Goa. The fort is entirely built of red laterite, it was built as a watch post of the border. However, during 1892, the fort was left deserted by the Portuguese. All that remains are the ruins of the fort in the present day, there are however two tunnels which attract the tourists.
Reis Magos Fort
In order to protect the entry point of Goa, at the mouth of River Mandovi, the Portuguese constructed this fort in the year 1551. The fort falls under the Bardez district of Goa. In the present day, the fort is in a quite good state of maintenance, in its base lies the Reis Magos Church.
Terekhol Fort
Built on the Terekhol River banks, Terekhol Fort was constructed by Maharaja of Sawanwadi. However, it was reconstructed in 1764 after it was overtaken by the Portuguese. Presently Terekhol Fort has been transformed into a heritage hotel.
Mormugao Fort
This famous fort of Goa is located near the Marmagoa Harbor; its construction was started as early as 1624. The fort housed 53 guns, a garrison and 4 officers. This earlier an important of the western coast now lies mostly in ruins except for its boundary walls and chapel.
Fortress of Colvale
Built in the year 1681 in order to prevent the invasion of the Marathas and Bhonsles, what remain of the Fortress of Colvale are its ruins. The fort was neglected and abandoned for years.
Cabo de Rama Fort
This important fort of Goa derives its name from the Hindu God, Lord Rama. Believed to be a fort of the Hindus, the fort is said to have taken over by both the Portuguese and British people.
Rachol Fort
This fort has played an important role for the Muslims, Hindus as well as the Portuguese. The interior of the fort has been well maintained, however, the Rachol Fort in general is not in a very stable state.
